Bilateral Heterogeneity in an Upwelling Mantle via Double Subduction of Oceanic Lithosphere

چکیده

Vietnam is a major field of Cenozoic volcanism in Southeast (SE) Asia. Two contrasting models have been proposed to explain the mantle upwelling and this region; collision Indian Eurasian continents or subduction Pacific Indo-Australian oceanic lithosphere. To place constraints on origin intraplate SE Asia, new geochronological geochemical data for basalts are presented. Based largely Sr-Nd-Pb isotope systematics, it was found that sources from Central Southern chemically distinct forming sharp boundary at 13.5°N. The north show isotopic features similar Enriched Mantle type 2 (EM2) ocean island basalts. Whereas south 1 (EM1) EM1 EM2 display positive Sr anomalies elevated Pb/Ce Th/La ratios, respectively. Such suggest origins through recycling deeply-subducted crustal lithologies. Furthermore, dense lithosphere can induce convecting cell upper mantle. Therefore, we different represent surface expression melting two cells, one driven by plate other plate.

Sampling Mantle Heterogeneity through Oceanic Basalts: Isotopes and Trace Elements

Until the arrival of the theories of plate tectonics and seafloor spreading in the 1960s, the Earth’s mantle was generally believed to consist of peridotites of uniform composition. This view was shared by geophysicists, petrologists, and geochemists alike, and it served to characterize the compositions and physical properties of mantle and crust as “Sial” (silica-alumina) of low density and “S...

Linking mantle upwelling with the lithosphere decent and the Japan Sea evolution: a hypothesis

Recent seismic tomography studies image a low velocity zone (interpreted as a high temperature anomaly) in the mantle beneath the subducting Pacific plate near the Japanese islands at the depth of about 400 km. This thermal feature is rather peculiar in terms of the conventional view of mantle convection and subduction zones. Here we present a dynamic restoration of the thermal state of the man...

CORRIGENDUM: Linking mantle upwelling with the lithosphere descent and the Japan Sea evolution: a hypothesis

The original version of this Article contained a typographical error in the title where the word descent was incorrectly given as decent. This has now been corrected in both the PDF and HTML versions of the Article.

A review of melt migration processes in the adiabatically upwelling mantle beneath oceanic spreading ridges

We review physical and chemical constraints on the mechanisms of melt extraction from the mantle beneath mid-ocean ridges. Compositional constraints from MORB and abyssal peridotite are summarized, followed by observations of melt extraction features in the mantle, and constraints from the physical properties of partially molten peridotite. We address two main issues. (1) To what extent is melt...
